These rankings are no longer being updated in preparation for a new formula. - 3/14/10
Guild rankings are based off 25-man raiding content only, and will only include the instances of Ulduar and Crusaders' Coliseum.
Guilds are asked to post progression kills on the WOW Forum Malygos Progression Thread.
If your guild does not post in this thread, than boss kills will not be recorded nor will the dates in a timely manner. It is important that all progression be posted to this thread to make sure these rankings are as accurate as possible. These rankings will be updated at least once every two weeks, depending on the number of new updates needed. Data will be verified against other ranking/boss kill recording sites and those guilds who fail to post to the thread, will eventually get caught up through this method.

The rankings are calculated by giving each encounter a point value and also by giving each date a point value. Factors that contribute to developing these point values include number of active guilds, number of guilds successful at that encounter, average time spent to down the encounter from when it is first available, etc. Each encounter value is then tuned based on difficulty to ensure a proper ranking of all measured encounters. For example, a Beasts of Northrend kill is not going to be more than a Yogg-Saron kill.
Icecrown has been added for the rankings. With this, Ulduar has been dropped as gear level now exceeds the content and is no longer relevant in tracking the current standings of guilds.
Only actively raiding guilds are listed. Guilds that have stopped raiding or no longer run 25-mans, are dropped from this list. The rankings are meant to be a snapshot of the current raiding environment, much like sports rankings.
With the introduction of Patch 3.2 and the new raid instance, two 25-man versions will be available - Normal and Heroic. Both of these versions will be tracked in the rankings when the patch rolls out. At present the intention is to allow the rankings to build off of what Ulduar offered. There will probably be a larger penalty towards the points offered from Ulduar raids so a guild progressing in the new Tier 9 content isn't out ranked by a Tier 8 only guild. This will also allow for a more accurate ranking of a guild overall throughout this current expansion. Of course, Tier 7 content will not be included due to the relative ease and widespread progression through the content by dozens of guilds and pugs. We will do a ranking capture on the last day before Tier 9 raiding is opened up to retain what the rankings looked like through Tier 8. Achievements right now for Tier 9 are still pretty rough, but will be evaluated to see if any will be tracked for guild rankings. This is all subject to change as we move closer to patch roll out this summer, so stay tuned.
Update 8/28/09: Rankings will be rolling out soon. With that, decision has been made to refresh the guilds that will be tracked. If a guild has not provided any new progression since July 1, 2009 or has announced their intention to cease raiding (or disband), they will be removed from the rankings. The rankings are meant to be a near-real time standings list of guilds on Malygos. While there are some guilds that have contributed a lot to the progression of the server, they will be noted in the progression pages but don't offer anything to current guild standings.
Guilds being dropped from following are listed below. Should any of these guilds re-start raiding, their progression and new kills will be added back into the data used to compile these rankings.
Horde: Anguish, The B Sharps, Ibyish Clan, and The Wolverines.
Alliance: Apathy, Arcanum, Ascendancy, CAPs, Cronosphere, Dev Null, Eagle's Pride, Enigma, Exilium, KEK, Lightbearer, Man Up (aka Man Down), Maximum Carnage, Midnight Shadow, The Tanks, and Vendi Vidi Vici.
